Australia’s consumer watchdog has sued Amazon, claiming the tech giant placed advertising in Prime Video using allegedly unfair contract conditions. Amazon has infringed consumer protection law by entering into unfair contracts with over one million annual members between November 2023 and August 2025, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) claimed.Consumers who wished to avoid adverts had no choice but to pay more to keep the service they had signed up for in the first place,” ACCC chair Gina Cass-Gottlieb said.
An Amazon representative said the business was “looking at the case filed by the ACCC in detail”.“We have worked closely with the ACCC during its investigation and remain focused on delivering the best experience for our Australian customers,” she added.
Prime Video was a commercial-free streaming offering available for over a decade as part of Amazon’s popular Prime subscription, sold as an upgrade on top of its main delivery service.
Prime launched in Australia in 2018. It started rolling out advertising in the service globally in early 2024.When Amazon started adding advertisements to Prime Video that year, it told users in Australia they’d have to pay an extra fee each month to keep the program ad-free, raising the monthly price to 12.99 Australian dollars.
