Following a “brief and sudden illness,” US Republican Senator Lindsey Graham passed away, according to his office. The statement said, “Senator Graham’s family requests privacy during this extremely difficult time and appreciates prayers at this time.”
The South Carolina-based senator began his legal career in the US Air Force before being elected to the US Senate in 2002. Up to his passing, he was the Senate Budget Committee’s chairman.
Graham, a well-known Republican voice on foreign affairs, had just returned from a meeting with Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the president of Ukraine, to discuss sanctions on Russia and support for Kyiv. After learning about Graham’s passing on Sunday, Trump declared him to be “one of the greatest people and Senators I have ever known.”He was a real American patriot who worked nonstop. “Lindsey will be sorely missed,” he continued.
Trump called Graham a “wonderful friend” who had “always been there when I needed him” in June while endorsing him for Senate reelection.
Graham has previously voiced doubts about Washington’s “memorandum of understanding” with Tehran, stating that he was “concerned that Iran’s view of the agreement seems different than what the American negotiating team is claiming.
