In apparent defiance of a new regulation banning the practice, US President Donald Trump stated that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) should carry out traffic stops in the wake of recent deadly shootings.
ICE is “doing a GREAT job, one that has to be done,” Trump posted on his social media platform early on Wednesday. We must be strong, tough, and smart and we CANNOT give up one of ICE’s most important and effective Crime Fighting tools, THE TRAFFIC STOP!” Trump declares in an attempt to deport criminals he claims were allowed entry into the nation during the previous Democratic administration.
Following two fatal shootings by ICE officers, ICE banned the use of traffic stops to apprehend immigrants on Tuesday, according to media sources. According to the Wall Street Journal and other publications, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) told ICE officers not to halt moving cars in order to make an arrest or interrogate the people inside. The ICE officer’s shooting deaths of Colombian driver Joan Sebastian Guerrero in Maine on Monday and another driver in Houston last week sparked further criticism of the agency’s methods, which led to the policy change.
