Before a new neighbor moved into Karolina Urbanova’s small Czech hamlet and asked her to assist with events when she was a teenager, she had never heard of lumberjack sports. She just smashed two world records in the annual Lumberjack World Championships, which took place over the weekend in Hayward, Wisconsin. She is currently 24 years old.
Since 1960, Hayward has hosted the tournament, which attracts people from all across America and the world together to demonstrate their abilities in everything from fast climbing to logrolling, chopping, and sawing. Although some events are mixed, men and women compete mostly independently. This year, 66 male participants were joined by 40 women from all around the US and overseas; this is a significant improvement over the female representation Urbanova first observed.She tells the BBC, “There were maybe like three girls doing this sport in Europe.” “Telling people from the city that you are chopping wood usually every day, they looked weird at me.”It is what it is because it makes me unique.” Along with her mother and sister, Urbanova’s potential was discovered by a male competitor. They started practicing every week in a barn, experimenting with various axes and tactics and receiving advice from more seasoned competitors as they competed across Europe and beyond.
