Eight people were killed and two more were injured when a partially built mosque in Abidjan, the capital of Ivory Coast, collapsed, Ivorian officials told AFP on Friday.
According to Alban Konan, the commander of rescue operations for the nation’s Military Firefighters Group, the mosque is situated in the heart of Cocody. In the same area, three other buildings have collapsed in the past few months.
He continued, “the second floor collapsed” at a “mosque under construction that was holding prayer” and that firefighters were notified of a “building collapse” at about 1600 GMT (8pm UAE time) on Thursday.
Regarding the legality of the works, the Ivorian Construction, Housing, and Urbanism Ministry has not confirmed. Six people were killed when an unauthorised building in Abidjan that was under construction collapsed in July 2023.
In two building collapses that occurred in February and March of 2023—one where construction was still in progress and the other where it was an illegal building an additional 13 people perished. Abidjan, a six million-person metropolis experiencing population growth, has seen an explosion in construction in recent years, sometimes done without official permits.
