Apple Promises to Address the ‘Bug’ Causing Suggestions for Palestinian Flag eEmojis

On Thursday, Apple committed to cease suggesting the Palestinian flag emoji to certain iPhone users when they input “Jerusalem” in message suggestions.

Silicon Valley’s computer behemoth attributed the alert to a software glitch, leading to claims that Apple was biased against Israel in light of the ongoing Gaza crisis. Apple informed AFP that the iPhone keyboard’s predictive emoji suggestion was an accident and would be addressed in the upcoming version of the company’s mobile operating system.

The quirk was pointed out on social media by British television presenter Rachel Riley, renewing debate over whether Israel or Palestinians have a rightful claim to Jerusalem as their capital.

She observed that no flag emojis were displayed when various capital cities entered into iPhone iMessage.

“Showing double standards concerning Israel is a form of antisemitism, which is itself a form of racism against Jewish people,” Riley wrote in the article.

She claimed that following a recent upgrade to the iPhone operating system, the Palestinian flag emoji started to appear concerning Jerusalem.

When I type the capital of Israel, Jerusalem, I’m offered the Palestinian flag emoji,” Riley wrote in a post on X, formerly Twitter, calling on Apple to explain.
