A sizable oil field has been found in the southern province of Najaf, close to the Saudi Arabian border, according to the Iraqi Ministry of Oil. According to preliminary estimations, one of the exploration patches includes reserves over 8.8 billion barrels of crude oil, making the discovery one of the most significant in the Iraqi energy sector in recent years.
The Qurnain block is situated near the Iraqi-Saudi border in the province of Najaf in southwest Iraq, approximately 180 kilometers from Baghdad. With an area of 8,773 square kilometers, it is one of the most promising regions for oil development. The contract to develop, explore and produce oil from it was signed on 17 October 2024. Drilling efforts at the Shams-11 exploratory well revealed the presence of light crude oil, with an initial production potential of 3,248 barrels per day, according to statistics released by the Ministry.
The announcement was made during an official meeting between representatives from China’s ZhenHua Oil and Iraqi Oil Minister Hayan Abdul Ghani. During the meeting, they reviewed the Qurnain site’s progress and talked about cutting-edge drilling techniques to boost exploration and production operations’ efficiency and speed development. In collaboration with the Iraqi side, ZhenHua is the primary operator of seismic survey and exploratory drilling operations through its subsidiary Qurnain Petroleum Limited.
