Catholics are spending Easter Monday bidding farewell to Pope Francis, their spiritual leader, from the Vatican to the Philippines. Less than 24 hours after the sick Pope spoke to worshippers in St. Peter’s Square on Easter Sunday, he passed away during one of the most significant periods of the year for Roman Catholics. Catholics are aware of that timing.
Father Sergio Codera is a Spanish Salesian priest who remarked, “He [God] picked the most beautiful day for the Christian Church – he couldn’t have picked a better day.” “Easter is the most significant holiday for Christians, when we celebrate that death does not have the last say,” he said. “And it has been this day that God has chosen for Pope Francis to meet him.”
Those who witnessed Francis’s last public act are shocked in the Vatican. One guy at St Peter’s Square told the BBC, “It was very shocking – we just saw him yesterday for the Easter celebration and we received a blessing.” A lady who attended his speech said: “He took his duty to the people so seriously – even when he was so unwell yesterday, he still came out, he was still part of the Easter mass, he still got to speak to us.” As worshippers have congregated in churches around Manila, the Philippine capital, to pray and consider the Pope’s passing, church bells have been ringing.
