Reuters, July 12, Beijing Foreign Minister Wang Yi told his Dutch counterpart over the phone that China would never accept the “unfounded accusations” made against it at the NATO summit this week in Washington, according to his ministry.
In addition to asking the military alliance to respect its interests and refrain from meddling in its domestic affairs, Wang stated that China is willing to continue having contact with NATO on “an equal footing” and to conduct exchanges on that basis.
Although China and the NATO members have different political systems and morals, he claimed that this should not be used as justification for NATO to “instigate confrontation with China.”
In the Thursday phone conversation, Wang stated, “The proper course of action is to fortify communication, improve comprehension, establish fundamental mutual trust, and prevent strategic miscalculation.
China denounced as biassed and “sowing discord” the NATO summit declaration that referred to it as a “decisive enabler” of Russia’s war effort in Ukraine on Thursday. Trade tensions with Beijing increased last week when the European Union announced it would levy tariffs of up to 37.6% on imported electric vehicles manufactured in China.
The European Commission is also said to have started asking the semiconductor industry in the area what it thinks about China producing more computer chips from earlier generations.
