In the face of increasing competition from Chinese AI startups, OpenAI released new tools for developers on Tuesday that will assist them in creating sophisticated AI agents using a few application programming interfaces (APIs). AI agents are made to carry out intricate real-world activities on their own without direct human assistance, whereas APIs are collections of code that allow software components to communicate, exchange data, and work consistently.
All developers have free access to the new tool, known as the Responses API. The Assistants API from OpenAI, which is scheduled to be phased out by the second half of 2026, is replaced by it. This comes shortly after Chinese entrepreneurs released their newest AI models, which they say are on par with or better than the top models in the US market for a fraction of the price.
A few days after DeepSeek received many accolades from Silicon Valley executives and engineers from U.S. tech companies, the Chinese startup Monica has gained notice for introducing its autonomous AI agent Manus.
Monica said on Tuesday that it was collaborating with the group that created Alibaba’s Qwen AI models. Monica says that its Manus AI performs better than OpenAI’s DeepResearch agent.
