Following Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s statement that he was appalled by the military escalation in Gaza, Britain on Tuesday halted free trade negotiations with Israel, called in its ambassador, and imposed more penalties against West Bank residents.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has stated that Israel will seize control of the whole Gaza Strip, and the Israeli military confirmed last week that a fresh operation had begun. Since the beginning of March, Israel has prevented gasoline, food, and medical supplies from entering Gaza, and international experts have issued famine warnings.
David Lammy, the foreign minister, called for Israel to lift the assistance blockade, denounced what he called “extremism” in some parts of the Israeli administration, and stated that the offensive was not the best approach to return the remaining captives home.
This new decline is too much for us to tolerate. Lammy told MPs, “It is incompatible with the principles that underpin our bilateral relationship.” To be honest, it’s an insult to the British people’s ideals. As a result, I’m declaring today that we have halted talks on a new free trade deal with this Israeli administration.
