Prince Faisal Bin Farhan Al Saud, the foreign minister of Saudi Arabia, is making his first trip to Beirut in 15 years on Thursday. As the Gulf kingdom regains influence in Lebanon, he hopes to secure a commitment to reform.
Prince Faisal is scheduled to meet with Joseph Aoun, the country’s new president, and Nawaf Salam, the prime minister-designate. Both took office this month, ushering in a new era for a nation enmeshed in a financial crisis since 2019 and is currently confronting billions of dollars in reconstruction costs. Saudi Arabia views the election of a Lebanese president following a more than two-year void as highly favourable, Prince Faisal said Tuesday at the World Economic Forum in Davos.
To increase our engagement, we will need to witness genuine action, genuine transformation, and a dedication to a Lebanon focused on the future rather than the past,” he stated.
I want to travel to Lebanon this week, and I believe that the kingdom’s strategy will be informed by what we observe and hear there,” he continued. He is anticipated on Thursday, according to Lebanese officials.
To aid in the reconstruction of the south following the 2006 Hizbollah-Israel conflict, Saudi Arabia once invested billions of dollars in Lebanon and deposited money in the national bank.
