As he begins his seventh year of incarceration, an Australian novelist has documented his “unbearable suffering” in a letter to his fans and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. A Beijing court sentenced Chinese-born Yang Hengjun to a suspended death sentence last year on espionage accusations, which he disputes.
He expressed gratitude to Albanese in his letter and stated that he and the Australian government were making every effort to return him home for medical treatment and to be reunited with his family.
In a statement, Foreign Minister Penny Wong expressed her and Albanese’s profound emotional response to Dr. Yang’s letter and their desire to “see him home in Australia, reunited with his family.
Dr. Yang, a former employee of China’s Ministry of State Security, wrote a blog about state problems in China, but he frequently refrained from criticising the government directly.
While residing in New York, he was stopped at the airport in January 2019 while travelling to Guangzhou on a visa run with his wife and their child, both of whom were Chinese nationals. Since then, the majority of his case has taken place behind closed doors. In 2024, he was given a suspended death sentence, which usually translates to life in prison after two years.
