US President Donald Trump announced on Saturday that India and Pakistan have agreed to a “full and immediate” ceasefire following days of heightened tensions and cross-border assaults from both sides.
“After a long night of discussions mediated by the United States, I am glad that India and Pakistan have agreed to a full and immediate cease-fire. “Congratulations to both countries for using common sense and great intelligence,” Trump said on his Truth Social platform.
His message was echoed by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who met with senior leaders from both nations and asked them to de-escalate tensions following the Pahalgam terror assault, which killed 26 people, the majority of whom were tourists.
Over the last 48 hours, VP Vance and I have met with senior Indian and Pakistani officials, including Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Shehbaz Sharif, External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, Chief of Army Staff Asim Munir, and National Security Advisors Ajit Doval and Asim Malik. I am glad to inform that the governments of India and Pakistan have agreed to an immediate ceasefire and to begin discussions on a wide range of topics at a neutral location,” Rubip said on X.
