The Pentagon’s efforts to simulcast a firing squad execution of the Fort Hood shooter have been called into question by US Vice-President JD Vance. Vance expressed uncertainty regarding the likelihood of the event occurring as intended during an interview with reporters, stating, “I am uncertain that that will actually transpire.”
He further stated, “I will not be watching it if it is broadcast live.” Vance characterised the actions of former US Army major Nidal Hasan as “the most severe terrorist attack on American soil since 9/11. In 2009, Hasan fatally shot 13 unarmed US soldiers at Fort Hood, injuring an additional 32. His firing squad execution would be the first military execution in over 60 years.
The Pentagon announced earlier this week that it would execute Hasan by firing squad, the first such execution since the conclusion of World War Two. Subsequently, on Thursday, US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth declared that the execution would be broadcast live to the public.”People must comprehend that these actions have severe repercussions,” stated Hegseth. The BBC has questioned the White House on whether Trump endorses the plans.
