Massive Alaska Megatsunami was The Second Greatest Ever Recorded

According to geologists, a massive ‘megatsunami’ wave caused by the collapse of an Alaskan mountain into the sea is the second-largest ever recorded and serves as a reminder of the risks posed by melting glaciers.

Last summer, a massive wave smashed through a secluded fjord in southeast Alaska, causing devastation. The event remained completely unnoticed at the time, but a new scientific research has revealed that it was caused by a major landslide.

An astonishing 64 million cubic metres of granite – the equivalent of 24 Great Pyramids – landed in the ocean below. The sheer force of so much rock plunging into the fjord in under a minute created a massive wave nearly 500 metres high.

According to the experts, only the timing – early in the morning – prevented tourist cruise ships from getting caught up in the disaster. Dr. Bretwood Higman, an Alaskan geologist who witnessed the destruction in Tracy Arm Fjord, described it as “a close call”.We know that there were folks who were almost in the wrong area,” he explained. ‘I’m scared that we won’t be as lucky in the future.”
