Spain demanded a clear timeline for the international community to implement a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. On Friday, Spain hosted a high-level meeting of several Muslim and European countries to discuss ways to end the Gaza war.
“We’re here to push for the cessation of hostilities between the Israelis and Palestinians, as well as for a solution to the ongoing conflict in Gaza… It is obvious in that way. Jose Manuel Albares, the foreign minister of Spain, told reporters that “the implementation of the two-state solution is the only way.”
Josép Borrell, the head of EU foreign policy, his counterparts from Norway and Slovenia, Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Mustafa, and members of the Arab-Islamic Contact Group for Gaza, which consists of Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Qatar, Jordan, Indonesia, Nigeria and Turkey.
The participants, who notably do not include Israel, Albares said showed “a clear willingness” “to move on from words to actions and to make strides towards a clear schedule for the effective implementation” of a two-state solution, beginning with Palestine’s admission to the UN.
Although Albares stated that “we will be delighted to see Israel at any table where peace and the two-state solution are discussed,” Israel was not invited because it was not a contact group member.
