Over 170 Migrants Were Saved when a Boat Caught Fire in the Channel

The UK government declared that “all will be returned” to France after more than 170 migrants were saved when the boat they were using to cross the Channel caught fire on Tuesday morning. According to the French marine prefecture of the Channel and North Sea, the boat’s engine caught fire when it was trying to cross to the UK. It has since increased the number of people rescued from 157 to 173. Eleven patients with minor injuries have been transported to Boulogne-sur-Mer in France.

An Egyptian national has been placed under policy detention in relation to the event, and French prosecutors have launched an inquiry. The incident, according to Border Security Minister Anna Turley, “shows the dangers of these illegal crossings and the ruthless gangs behind them”We are putting pressure on them because of this,” she stated.

The yacht departed France on Monday night, according to French authorities. The French maritime prefecture said that “five people on board the vessel required rescue… the remaining people on board refused the assistance offered by the French patrol boats” during the night.
