Hours after an Israeli-Hezbollah truce went into effect early on Wednesday morning, long-displaced people in south Lebanon began to return home amid festivities.
After days of some of the most intensive airstrikes and skirmishes since the start of the war, the truce has comforted the small Mediterranean nation, while many questioned whether the agreement to suspend fighting would last. Israel has threatened to launch an airstrike if Hizbollah violates the ceasefire deal, which was declared on Tuesday.
Although it does not address the catastrophic conflict in Gaza, the Israel-Hizbollah ceasefire is a significant first step in resolving the regional instability brought on by Hamas’ attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.
A day after the Hamas strike, Hizbollah launched an attack against Israel. With significant Israeli airstrikes throughout the country and an Israeli ground invasion of the south in September, the fighting in Lebanon turned into a full-scale conflict.
Gaza’s Health Ministry reports that in the nearly 14-month conflict between Israel and Hamas, over 44,000 Palestinians have died, and over 104,000 have been injured.
