Since the UK and the EU agreed to a significant relationship reset, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has stated that it is time to put aside the “political fights” around Brexit. The UK and the EU have reached an agreement that includes boosting links in some policy areas that are still up for discussion, as well as fisheries, commerce, military, and energy.
A crucial component of the agreement is giving European fishing vessels an additional 12 years of access to British seas in exchange for reducing certain trade tensions. After years of Brexit-related disputes, it is the most significant overhaul since the UK formally exited the EU in 2020.
While the Liberal Democrats said the government had made some “positive first steps” to repairing ties with Europe, the Conservatives and Reform UK have characterised the agreement as a “surrender” to the EU.
The deal was completed late Sunday in preparation for Monday’s conference in London between EU leaders Antonio Costa and Ursula von der Leyen. At the summit, Sir Keir declared, “It’s time to look forward.”
“To put aside the stale old arguments and political battles to come up with sensible, workable solutions that benefit the British people the most.” If working with partners can help us improve people’s lives at home, we’re willing to do so.
