According to a spokesperson for Qatar’s Foreign Ministry on Tuesday, the two countries are still working to relaunch talks between the US and Iran, with officials meeting with the parties every day to discuss potential paths forward. Majed Al-Ansari told reporters in Doha, “Our officials are on the phone on a daily basis trying to workshop ideas, workshop ways of getting back to the negotiations.”
Al-Ansari stated that Qatar remained committed to finding a diplomatic solution to the ongoing conflict between the two sides, but he did not elaborate on the options under discussion. “Reaching a diplomatic solution through talks was always our priority,” he stated. “We are urging the parties to participate fully in the negotiations and mediation, which are being led by Pakistan, Qatar, and other regional players.”
He went on to call talks “the only way out of this crisis” and exhorted both parties to act honourably. Since the battle began in late February, Qatar and Pakistan have served as the two principal intermediaries between the United States and Iran. Al-Ansari’s remarks followed a visit to Tehran by Pakistan’s army chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, who met with top Iranian officials in an attempt to ease tensions in the region and restart discussions.
