Six British diplomats were accused of spying by Russia on Friday, and the country decided to expel them. The UK claimed that the “utterly baseless” action was taken some weeks ago and was related to its decision in May to restrict Moscow’s diplomatic presence in London and to revoke the attaché’s credentials at the Russian Embassy.
As British Prime Minister Keir Starmer travels to Washington for talks, the latest East-West tensions surfaced. The agenda includes Ukraine’s request to use weapons supplied by the West to strike targets inside Russia. Vladimir Putin has issued a warning, stating that if Kyiv uses long-range weapons, NATO will be forced to fight Moscow.
According to a statement released by Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) online, the British envoys’ accreditations were revoked. Russian TV quoted an FSB official as saying that the decision to expel the envoys was made.
According to documents the FSB said it received, the diplomats were dispatched to Russia by a branch of the UK Foreign Office “whose main task is to inflict a strategic defeat on our country. ” They were also engaged in “intelligence-gathering and subversive activities.” The FSB omitted the six diplomats’ identities.
The FSB issued a warning, stating that it “will demand early termination of their missions” to Russia if it is discovered that other diplomats are engaging in “similar actions.”
