Following the death of a rider who allegedly fell off a ride at Six Flags Over Georgia on Monday, the theme park chain is temporarily closing nine more coasters at six of its locations. Local media accounts state that a passenger fell or was thrown from the 200-foot, 70-mph Goliath coaster, though the death’s specifics have not yet been formally confirmed.
Witnesses told Atlanta NBC station 11Alive of a “gruesome scene” in which the rider repeatedly struck the coaster while falling. According to one ride, the falling man was even caught in a souvenir photo that was immediately taken and sold in the gift shop. The witness stated, “He was in our pictures.” “He hit the car three times after falling.” Police say several other riders were hurt as well. According to two riders, personnel checked their safety belts in accordance with practice before the ride began.
In a statement, a Six Flags representative told the Associated Press, “We have temporarily closed similar attractions across our parks out of an abundance of caution.” “One of our top priorities continues to be the safety of our guests and team members.” Following the incident, riders are seen being escorted off Goliath in the video below.
Nine other coasters, including Goliath at Magic Mountain in Valencia, California; Nitro at Six Flags Great Adventure in New Jersey; and Orion and Diamondback at Kings Island in Ohio, have been temporarily closed. These rides resemble the Goliath in the Georgia park. The announcement comes after two riders had brain haemorrhages and numerous other riders reported severe problems, leading Six Flags Magic Mountain to permanently close its well-liked X2 ride last month. Due to the ride, three people have sued Six Flags and the coaster’s manufacturer.
