As world leaders work to settle the three-year conflict, South Korea’s military said Thursday that North Korea appears to have transferred at least 3,000 more troops to Russia early this year, indicating Pyongyang’s sustained backing for Moscow’s war on Ukraine.
The news comes as state media TASS reports that Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Andrey Rudenko stated preparations are underway for North Korean leader Kim Jong Un to visit Russia.
According to South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff, the reinforcements, which were dispatched in January and February, are part of the approximately 11,000 personnel that North Korea has already sent to Russia. Seoul claims that almost 4,000 of them had been killed or wounded in battle.
According to South Korea, Pyongyang has also deployed a “significant amount” of short-range ballistic missiles, roughly 220 pieces of 240-millimeter multiple rocket launchers, and 170-millimeter self-propelled howitzers. Contributions from the North are “expected to increase according to the situation,” it stated.
Amid dubious efforts by the White House to broker a ceasefire, European leaders and allies are scheduled to gather in Paris Thursday to discuss aid for Ukraine and long-term security in the region, while North Korea seems to be increasing its support for Russia’s war.
