Only days after Second Lady Usha Vance’s trip to Greenland was revealed, a visit to observe the dogs and mushers is out. According to a senior White House official, she will instead travel to a US military facility miles away from any human population centre. Her husband, Vice President JD Vance, will accompany her, and he is anticipated to criticise the Danish government on the island.
Múte Egede, the leader of the semiautonomous Danish territory, called the White House’s initial description of the second lady’s visit as an attempt to learn more about the island’s culture which President Donald Trump has openly discussed annexing became controversial very quickly. JD Vance, a senior White House staffer, told CNN that he chose to accompany his wife as the outcry over her trip grew.
The official explained that the vice president contended that if Danish and island leaders were going to become “agitated” over his wife’s visit, they could become agitated over him and his entourage visiting the region. “It was a combination of a little bit of commotion from Danish leaders combined with Vance wanting to go for a while,” the official said. In a video announcing his involvement earlier this week, Vance stated, “I decided I didn’t want her to have all that fun by herself, so I’m going to join her.
