Hours before a deadline set by the US, one of Canada’s provincial leaders has criticized a potential trade agreement with the US and urged his nation to wait for beneficial terms. This indicates that Prime Minister Mark Carney will have a difficult time gaining support for the pact.
In order to avoid a new round of US tariffs on a variety of Canadian goods, negotiators have until Friday nite to finalize the agreement. However, Wab Kinew, the premier of Manitoba, stated that Canada “should fight” rather than make hasty compromises.
In order for the US to allegedly agree to lower some of its tariffs on Canadian metals and automobiles, Carney requires Kinew and other premiers to bring back sales of US booze on liquor store shelves. On Friday morning, US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and Canada-US Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc are scheduled to meet once more. LeBlanc told reporters that he and Greer were “very close” following a meeting that lasted more than three hours on Thursday.
According to information released to multiple media sites, the US will consent to lower tariffs on Canadian cars from 25% to 15% and on Canadian steel and aluminium from 50% to 25%.
