Later, King Charles III and Queen Camilla will visit Canada for two days, expected to convey support for the nation in the face of US President Donald Trump’s insults and threats.
Prime Minister Mark Carney, who just won a general election on a wave of anti-Trump support, invited the royal couple and will meet with them when they are in Ottawa. Tuesday will mark the first time a monarch has read the “Speech from the Throne” to Canada’s Parliament in over 50 years. It is anticipated to defend Canada’s sovereignty and reject arguments that the US should take control.
On Monday, there will be meetings with community organisations, including those from Canada’s First Nation communities, and a formal greeting at the airport in Ottawa. Canada’s first indigenous governor general, Mary Simon will meet the King.
This is the first time the King and Queen have visited Canada since the beginning of their reign, following the cancellation of a scheduled trip last year due to King Charles’s cancer diagnosis.
Following in the footsteps of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, who performed the same function twice throughout her lengthy reign in 1957 and 1977, the King is reading the Speech from the Throne.
