On Wednesday, a federal court in Maryland became the second in the US to stop the Trump administration from carrying out the Republican president’s executive order that aims to restrict birthright citizenship in the US.
In Greenbelt, US District Judge Deborah Boardman sided with five pregnant women and two immigrant rights organisations who claimed that their children could be unconstitutionally denied U.S. citizenship because of their parents’ legal status.
A countrywide preliminary injunction was obtained by the judge, appointed by Trump’s Democratic predecessor Joe Biden, preventing Trump’s order from taking effect nationwide on February 19.
Almost all infants born in the United States today are citizens of the United States at birth, according to Boardman. “That is our nation’s law and custom. Until this matter is resolved, that law and tradition will continue to be the norm. A federal court in Seattle had earlier put a 14-day suspension on January 23, but Boardman’s order gave opponents of Trump’s program longer-term respite.
John Coughenour, that judge, referred to Trump’s order as “blatantly unconstitutional.” On Thursday, Coughenour will decide whether to also impose a preliminary injunction that would be in force until the case is resolved.
