CNN, the US news network, announced Thursday that it will lay off 200 employees, or 6% of its workforce, as part of a significant staffing and programming reorganisation in the face of a flood of political news.
Following other outlets’ restructuring in the wake of Donald Trump’s return to the White House on Monday, the broadcaster stated that the total number of employees might stay the same with creating new roles.
In a statement to employees, CNN CEO Mark Thompson stated, “While some of today’s announcements mean significant new job opportunities at CNN, others will lead to the loss of some valued colleagues.”
Indeed, about 6% of the existing CNN personnel will lose their jobs, but we don’t anticipate a significant drop in the company’s overall headcount this year, if any,” he continued.
The $70 million we’re spending on our digital ambitions and the several new jobs they will support are the reasons for this.
It’s unclear if the reorganization would follow the trend of some other traditional media organizations, which have laid off senior reporters and editors who earn higher wages to create room for younger, less expensive employees for digital projects.
