Following the victory of a right-wing nationalist candidate in the first round of the presidential election, Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu resigned and his Social Democrat party is leaving the government.
With 40.9% of the vote on Sunday, euroskeptic George Simion who has pledged to prioritise Romania is likely to win a run-off election on May 18. He will take on Nicușor Dan, a liberal mayor of Bucharest who defeated the Social Democrat (PSD) candidate by a slim margin.
The outcome on Sunday caused more political unrest in Romania, an EU member on NATO’s eastern frontier. Ciolacu advised colleagues to leave the government since their coalition “has no legitimacy” and had not achieved its goal.
George Simion’s far-right party and two other factions had garnered a third of the vote, but Ciolacu, 57, had just taken office in a pro-EU coalition following the 2024 elections. To determine their next course of action, the coalition’s parties had been gathering in emergency sessions on Monday.
The annulment of the presidential elections late last year was a major factor in the public’s annoyance at Simion’s triumph on Sunday. Kyiv and the capitals of Europe anxiously anticipate his probable victory on May 18. He stated his desire for a powerful, independent EU, and his party opposed arms sales to Ukraine.
