In a speech at the NATO summit in Turkey, the president of Ukraine urged partners to provide Kyiv with the air defense systems it desperately needs to defend against intensifying Russian attacks.Volodymyr Zelensky stated on Tuesday morning, “We are capable of doing everything else ourselves, but we need our partners’ determination when it comes to air defense.”
After Russian missiles struck the Ukrainian capital twice in less than a week, falling into apartment buildings and killing over fifty civilians, Zelensky’s appeal for assistance is more urgent.
Zelensky will also get the opportunity to meet with Donald Trump at the summit in Ankara and make his case that Vladimir Putin should be coerced into negotiations for a “dignified” peace and that Russia’s “brutal” strikes are an act of weakness rather than strength.
The most recent attacks on Ukraine coincide with the country intensifying its own long-range drone operations against Russia, striking military targets and oil facilities there, resulting in severe fuel shortages and power outages.
