For a horrific act that caused widespread hospital strikes and nationwide protests last year, the rapist and killer of an Indian doctor was given a life sentence on Monday. In a case that brought attention to the persistent problem of violence against women in the most populous nation in the world, the 31-year-old medic’s family broke down in tears, expressing their dismay at the punishment and their wish that her killer would be hanged.
Judge Anirban Das, however, ruled that Sanjoy Roy should be imprisoned for the remainder of his life since the case was not “the rarest of the rare cases,” and so did not warrant the death penalty. The bloodied body of the trainee physician was found in a government hospital in Kolkata, an eastern city, in August 2024, sparked outrage.
Following the murder, physicians at government hospitals demanded more protection, and thousands of people in Kolkata and other Indian cities joined the doctors’ rallies in sympathy. A day after the victim’s death was found, Roy, 33, the only defendant in the case, who had volunteered at the hospital, was taken into custody.
A national task committee was mandated by India’s Supreme Court last year to investigate ways to improve security for healthcare professionals, stating that the killing’s savagery had “shocked the conscience of the nation.” Roy’s parents, who were seated near him in court on Monday, expressed their desire for Roy to be put to death.
