President Donald Trump asserted in a recent interview with Sean Hannity on Fox News that hefty import duties made it difficult for Tesla CEO Elon Musk to sell automobiles in India. According to Trump, it would be unjust to the US if Musk opened a production facility in India. Trump threatened to impose equivalent duties on Indian goods in retaliation for the country’s imposition of some of the highest tariffs in the world. Trump asserted that foreign countries had exploited the United States, focussing on India in particular, by imposing excessive tariffs.
Every nation in the world exploits us, and they do it with tariffs,” Trump stated. In India, for instance, they make it nearly impossible for him [Musk] to sell a car. Trump stated that while Musk’s desire to establish a factory in India is OK, it is hugely unfair to the United States.
Musk said that India levies up to 100% tariffs on cars during a meeting in Washington, DC. Trump claimed to have told Prime Minister Narendra Modi that he will impose tariffs on the US that are similar to those imposed by India during their meeting. He said that same strategy would be used in every nation. Modi’s conversation with the billionaire during a two-day visit to Washington, DC, coincided with Trump’s criticism of the proposed Tesla plant in India.
