A Wisconsin judge was detained and charged with obstruction by federal officials for allegedly assisting an unauthorised immigrant in avoiding arrest. Milwaukee County Circuit Judge Hannah Dugan was accused by FBI director Kash Patel, who announced her arrest, of “intentionally misdirecting” immigration authorities away from a Mexican man they were attempting to arrest last week.
Thankfully, our agents chased down the perpetrator on foot, and he has been in custody since. Still, the Judge’s obstruction created increased danger to the public,” Patel stated on X. Dugan “wholeheartedly regrets and protests her arrest,” according to her attorney during Friday’s preliminary court hearing. Public safety was not the reason for its creation.
The judge may spend up to six years in jail if found guilty of both the obstruction charge and the concealment allegation of preventing an arrest. In anticipation of a hearing on May 15, Dugan was freed on her own recognisance. The charges are related to the events that occurred last week in Dugan’s courtroom.
The FBI filed court paperwork in the case stating that on April 17, an immigration judge issued a warrant for the arrest of Eduardo Flores-Ruiz, a Mexican national accused of three misdemeanour violence crimes related to a domestic altercation.
