The EU has instructed Meta to allow competitors’ AI chatbots to use WhatsApp for free. While it completed an antitrust probe into the tech giant’s decision to prohibit access for AI providers other than Meta AI on the messaging platform, the European Commission stated that the company would have to keep that access.
It claimed that Meta’s actions looked to violate EU competition laws and that the intervention was necessary to stop “serious and irreparable harm to competition in this growing market by Meta’s conduct”.
In a furious response, Meta accused the Commission of “regulatory overreach.” It claims to be appealing. After Meta prohibited third-party general-purpose AI assistants from using the WhatsApp for Business API, the EU said it began its inquiry in December 2025.
It claimed that this was a misuse of Meta’s hegemonic position in European markets. Therefore, it has granted Meta five working days to restore third-party general-purpose AI assistants’ access to the WhatsApp for Business API under the same terms and conditions as before, as a temporary remedy while its investigation is ongoing.
