In a livestream from her beauty parlour in Zapopan, Mexico, Valeria Marquez was speaking to her TikTok fans when a small package was delivered to her door. The 23-year-old beauty influencer returned to her audience and unwrapped the plush animal, grinning and tossing her long blond hair over her shoulder. “He’s a little piglet!” she cried.
Even while the livestream went on, she was dead a few moments later, slouched in her chair with blood accumulating on the desk in front of her. Only when someone else took up her phone and briefly revealed their face to the audience did the video stop.
The Attorney General’s office in the state of Jalisco reports that Marquez was shot dead by a male intruder who entered her salon. The office is looking into the matter as a possible instance of femicide, which is defined as the killing of a woman or girl for reasons related to her gender.
Many murders involving women are femicides, although not all of them are. According to Amnesty International, a quarter of Mexican female homicides in 2020 were looked at as femicides, with cases documented in all 32 states. According to Mexican government statistics, there were 847 recorded occurrences of femicide nationally last year, and 162 in the first three months of this year.
