Over the next twenty years, Microsoft founder Bill Gates plans to use the majority of his $200 billion (£150 billion) fortune to enhance health and education facilities in Africa. The 69-year-old stated that “by unleashing human potential through health and education, every country in Africa should be on a path to prosperity.”
Speaking in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, he encouraged young African inventors to consider developing artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance healthcare across the continent. Gates declared last month that he would donate 99 per cent of his enormous fortune by 2045, when his foundation was scheduled to shut down.
I just pledged to give away my fortune over the next twenty years. The majority of those funds would be used to assist you in addressing difficulties in Africa,” he stated during his talk at the African Union (AU) headquarters.
Graça Machel, Mozambique’s former First Lady, hailed his decision, saying it came at a “crisis point.” We depend on Mr Gates’ unwavering dedication to continue pursuing this path of transformation alongside us,” the woman stated.
As part of President Donald Trump’s “America First” agenda, the US government has reduced funding to Africa, including projects to treat HIV/AIDS patients, raising fears for the continent’s healthcare future.
