A president is being pushed into a shock-and-awe entry into a Middle East battle with no surefire exit by events, fear of the spread of WMDs, and the need to support his own statements.
There are rising expectations in Washington that Donald Trump would soon follow Israeli recommendations to try to use bunker-busting missiles that only the United States can deliver in order to inflict a devastating blow to Iran’s nuclear program.
Following the apparent success of Israel’s initial bombardment, which killed key military officials and nuclear experts and seriously damaged Iran’s ability to defend itself, the president’s rhetoric took a drastic shift.
It is just not going to work as long as President Trump attempts to use Israeli aggression against Iran as leverage to pressure the Iranian leadership into surrendering. On CNN International’s “Connect the World” on Tuesday, Ali Vaez, head of the International Crisis Group’s Iran Project, told Becky Anderson, “They see complete surrender and the fall of the regime at the end of this slippery slope.”
Who’s to say a president who has lately been disregarded by China’s Xi Jinping and Russia’s Vladimir Putin could stop Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, especially because Israel’s preemptive strike on Iran appears to be partially driven by the desire to thwart US diplomacy?
