More than 1,000 people attended the burial of Democratic former Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman on Saturday, including former US President Joe Biden and former Vice President Kamala Harris.
Two weeks prior, a guy acting as a police officer had shot her to death in what Minnesota’s top federal prosecutor has described as an assassination. The incident also claimed the life of her husband, Mark, and left a state senator and his spouse gravely wounded.
Melissa Hortman will go down in Minnesota history as the most influential speaker. Governor Tim Walz gave a eulogy, saying, “I get to remember her as a close friend, a mentor, and the most talented legislator I ever knew.
I have had the honour of enacting her agenda for seven years. I am aware that her and Mark’s decision to pursue politics and public service has improved the lives of millions of Minnesotans.
Hortman contributed to the passage of a broad range of liberal policies, such as increased protections for transgender and abortion rights and free meals for kids in public schools. The burial was attended by dozens of state lawmakers from both parties, both present and retired, as well as other public people who collaborated with Hortman.
