White House: Trump ‘Unhappy’ But Unsurprised by Kyiv Strikes

While calling on “both sides” to put a stop to the conflict that Moscow’s invasion sparked, the White House said Thursday that US President Donald Trump was disappointed but not shocked by Russia’s attacks on the Ukrainian capital Kyiv. This news did not make him happy, but it did not surprise him either. “These two nations have been engaged in a protracted conflict,” Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated during a briefing.

In one of the largest raids of the war, Russian drones and missiles tore through apartment buildings, killing at least 19. A British government cultural building and the European Union mission were also destroyed.

Leavitt said that Ukrainian attacks in August had seriously damaged Russian oil refineries and that Russian attacks had been lethal. Trump, she said, wants the war to end, but “perhaps both sides of this war are not ready to end it themselves.” Steve Witkoff, the U.S. special envoy, stated on Fox News’ “Special Report with Bret Baier” on Tuesday that he will be meeting with Ukrainian officials in New York this week. It is anticipated that the meeting will occur on Friday.
