A tense political season is unfolding in the US as Donald Trump wields sweeping power with few restraints, often pushing the limits of the Constitution. At the same time, Democrats struggle to mount a unified response to voter demands for more vigorous opposition.
Trump is acting with urgency, threatening to deploy the National Guard to more Democratic-run cities, ramping up deportations, and moving against federal agencies, including a recent purge of senior scientists at the CDC.
On the global stage, he has demanded recognition with a Nobel Peace Prize even as wars in Ukraine and Gaza grind on. His tariff battles have shaken faith in US economic stability and driven India closer to China. Yet, a federal appeals court ruling that his tariffs were unlawful has exposed vulnerabilities in his trade agenda.
No detail seems too minor for Trump’s attention. He has redesigned the White House grounds, replacing the Rose Garden and proposing a lavish East Wing ballroom. At the same time, his late-night social media tirades signal his determination to dominate every political, cultural, and national conversation.
Democrats, however, are beginning to push back. California Gov. Gavin Newsom has sharpened his attacks on Trump with biting mockery, boosting his own profile for the 2028 presidential race. In Illinois, Gov. JB Pritzker has aimed at Trump’s promised crackdown on crime and immigration, vowing to block federal troop deployments in Chicago.
