US President Donald Trump has stated that he is prepared to apply more severe penalties on Russia, but only if NATO nations fulfill specific requirements, such as ceasing to purchase Russian oil. He stated that he was “ready to do major sanctions on Russia” when NATO countries had “agreed, and started, to do the same thing” in a post on his Truth Social platform.
Since the Kremlin disregarded his deadlines and sanctions threats, Trump has regularly promised more severe actions against Moscow but has not yet taken any concrete action. He called the Russian oil purchases “shocking” and proposed that NATO impose 50–100% tariffs on China, saying that this would undermine its “strong control” over Russia.
Trump stated in what he referred to as a letter to NATO countries: “I am prepared to ‘go’ when you are. Simply state the time. Some people’s acquisition of Russian oil has been shocking,” he continued. It significantly reduces your bargaining power and negotiation stance with Russia.
Trump further asserted that the suspension of Russian energy purchases and the imposition of high tariffs on China “to be fully withdrawn” following the war would be “great help” in bringing the conflict to a close. Since Moscow began its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Europe has become much less dependent on Russian energy.
