First Lady Melania Trump joined members of the Armed Forces at Windsor Castle during a Beating Retreat ceremony, marking the start of US President Donald Trump’s second state visit to the United Kingdom. The visit blended politics with pageantry, featuring elaborate ceremonies, a royal banquet, and discussions on trade and technology.
Britain rolled out a grand welcome, but the event was not free from controversy. While Trump was being welcomed with pomp in Windsor, around 5,000 protesters gathered in London to voice opposition to his visit. Demonstrators chanted, drummed, and displayed banners against the president, although Trump himself remained largely shielded from the dissent while enjoying the formalities and later flying by helicopter to Chequers, the countryside residence of Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
At the state banquet in Buckingham Palace, King Charles III praised Trump for his “personal commitment” to global peace efforts. In turn, Trump spoke warmly of the UK, describing the visit as “one of the highest honours of my life.” He reflected on his mother’s Scottish roots and reaffirmed his long-standing admiration for Britain.
Trump also praised members of the royal family during the evening. He commended King Charles for raising his “remarkable son” Prince William, expressing confidence that the heir would become “an unbelievable success in future.” He further complimented Princess Catherine, describing her as “radiant, healthy, and beautiful.
