Apps that allow users to report sightings of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) personnel have been removed by Apple. After being alerted by law authorities about “safety risks” connected to ICEBlock and “similar apps,” the internet giant announced that it had taken the software out of its software Store.
ICE Immigration Alerts is another app that has been taken down from Google Play and the App Store. Coqui, the third, has also been removed from Google Play. In a statement, US Attorney General Pam Bondi said that ICEBlock was “designed to put ICE agents at risk” and that she had “demanded” its removal.
After learning of the removal via email, the app’s developer reached out to BBC Verify and charged Apple with “capitulating to an authoritarian regime.” According to the ruling, current ICEBlock users can continue using the app, but new users are prohibited from downloading it.
In reaction to President Trump’s crackdown on illegal immigration and an increase in ICE raids, many applications were released this year. The government is accused by critics, including the founder of ICEBlock, of abusing its authority and “bringing terror” to American streets.
