A US website has revealed the private phone numbers of a number of well-known people, including Donald Trump Jr. and the prime minister of Australia. The BBC has chosen not to identify the website, which employs artificial intelligence (AI) to scan the internet for information. However, both of their personal contact data are still publicly visible.
Local authorities are looking into the matter, which independent Australian media outlet Ette Media initially reported. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s office is aware of it.
The issue was described as “obviously concerning” by a representative for Australia’s opposition leader Sussan Ley, whose private number was also made public, who claimed they had asked for the information to be taken down. Recruiters and sales reps utilize the site, which reportedly contains contact information for hundreds of millions of professionals.
Although it’s unclear if Donald Trump Jr. still uses it, the BBC has confirmed that it contains his personal contact information and Albanese’s current private number. Additionally, it’s unclear how the website got the information, but Australia has recently experienced a number of significant data breaches.
The BBC also dialed the numbers for former US presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama, but were picked up by a man who was clearly bewildered. A landline in London, allegedly belonging to Prime Minister Keir Starmer of the United Kingdom, rang.
