The BBC was informed by the father of a freed Israeli hostage that his son’s health is “improving every day” after he was made to dig his own tomb in a tunnel in Gaza by Hamas. Following the hero’s welcome at their homes on Sunday for the release of his 24-year-old son Evyatar David and two other liberated captives, Guy Gilboa Dalal and Eitan Mor, from the hospital, Avishai David was speaking.
The father continued, “I can’t express how pleased I am to see him returning to his former self. Two months prior to Evyatar’s release, in August, Hamas uploaded a video of him looking gaunt in a small concrete tunnel. Israel and other Western politicians denounced this action.
He is the skeleton of a human. He suffers greatly and is malnourished to the point where he could die at any time, Ilay stated at the time. According to Evyatar, who was speaking in the video, “I haven’t eaten for days… I barely got drinking water.” He was spotted excavating what he said was his own grave.
When Evyatar David returned to his hometown of Kfar Saba in central Israel on Sunday, he was greeted by enthusiastic crowds, including many of his friends and neighbours. The director of Rabin Medical Centre, where the three freed captives received treatment, Dr. Michal Shteinman, told the BBC that the signs of “this horrific captivity” were still visible on their bodies.
