After a massive fire broke out in their high-rise public housing complex in Hong Kong’s Tai Po neighborhood, Mr. Chung spoke those final words to his wife. He received her terrified phone call on Wednesday at approximately 15:00 local time (07:00 GMT). She claimed that she was unable to leave their apartment with their pet.
When he got home from work, the 31-story building was on fire and spewing black smoke. At least 83 people have died as a result of the fire that tore through seven tower blocks, including theirs, and it took firefighters in the Chinese colony almost a full day to put out the fire. Mr. Chung’s wife is one of the nearly 300 people who are still unaccounted for.
Several residents who were either not at home or were able to flee in time were interviewed by the BBC. Some have lingered outside the blazing buildings, hoping without hope, like Mr. Chung. They all informed the BBC that there was no siren alerting them to danger.
The 45-year-old Mr. Chung and his brother spent Wednesday night on the street, repeatedly requesting updates from the firefighters, but they were unable to provide them. He claimed that throughout, he and his spouse continued to call each other in fear and anxiety. As the smoke grew stronger, she informed him she was about to pass out.
