During the NATO summit in Ankara, US President Donald Trump once again attacked neighboring member Spain and rekindled his desire to annex Greenland. Speaking in front of NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, Trump denounced his European friend as a “wasted cause” and a “terrible partner in NATO” and declared his intention to sever all trade ties with Spain.
Additionally, he referred to NATO’s opposition to his proposal for the US to acquire Greenland instead of Denmark as a big problem for us. Later, Pedro Sánchez, the prime minister of Spain, asserted that ties with the US were “very positive” and that he had spoken casually with Trump. We discussed the World Cup, and there was absolutely no tension instead, it was all extremely kind,” Sánchez remarked.
Spain was responding to Trump’s message calmly and quietly, according to government officials in Madrid, and had no plans to alter its “excellent social, cultural, and economic relationship. But it’s obvious that Trump has not forgiven Sánchez’s socialist-led government for denying the US access to bases at Morón and Rota for operations related to the war against Iran.
Sánchez’s failure to raise Spain’s defense spending to 5% of its GDP has also irritated Trump, who has described it as “unreasonable but also counterproductive”. In 2025, Spain allocated 2% of its GDP to defence.
