Despite the EV giant’s challenges with poor sales in Asia’s third-biggest economy, Tesla has established its largest sales and service operation in India. The facility, located in the northern city of Gurugram, offers charging, after-sales services, and an experience showroom all under one roof.
According to dealership data, the EV manufacturer has sold just over 100 vehicles in India since its well-reported launch in July of this year. In an effort to boost sales momentum, Tesla is now concentrating on bolstering India’s EV ecosystem, according to sources close to the firm who spoke with the BBC. Tesla did not immediately respond to inquiries from the BBC regarding the low sales numbers.
Since its July launch, the Elon Musk-owned electric vehicle manufacturer has been struggling to gain traction in India; according to media sources, it has received bookings for just over 600 vehicles as of mid-September.
Even though competing models in the luxury category from companies like BMW, BYD, and Mercedes-Benz reported strong sales bolstered by Christmas demand and tax savings, only a small part of these bookings converted into sales since delivery began in September, according to dealership data obtained by the BBC.
Three strategies are reportedly part of the EV manufacturer’s effort to enhance sales: expanding adoption, adding more charging stations nationwide, and improving customer satisfaction.
