After failing to fulfill a 48-hour deadline to begin flights there, six major foreign airlines were prohibited from landing in Venezuela. Following the US’s warning of “heightened military activity” in the region, airlines temporarily halted flights to Caracas, the country’s capital.
This infuriated the Venezuelan government, which sent the airlines an ultimatum that ended on Wednesday. Thousands of travelers have been impacted, even though several smaller airlines still operate flights to Venezuela.
The US has sent a sizable force to the waters around Venezuela, claiming to be fighting drug trafficking, but the country’s leader has condemned this as an attempt to topple him.
Iberia, TAP Portugal, Gol, Latam, Avianca, and Turkish Airlines will immediately lose their landing and takeoff privileges, according to a Wednesday announcement from Venezuela’s civil aviation authority, which answers to the nation’s ministry of transportation.
It also charged the airlines with “joining the actions of state terrorism promoted by the United States government and unilaterally suspending air commercial operations” in relation to the increased US military activity off the coast of Venezuela. The USS Gerald Ford, the largest aircraft carrier in the world, and 15,000 US troops have been stationed close to Venezuela.
